Uganda has the youngest population in the world, with 77% of Uganda’s population being youths below 25 years. This age group is critical for new HIV infections, and HIV prevalence triples from young people aged 15–19 years (1.1%) to those aged 20–24 years (3.3%). However, testing for HIV among young people is much lower in those aged 15–19 years (47.3%) compared to those aged 20-24 years (84.4%). Adolescents and young people represent a growing share of people living with HIV worldwide. In 2022 alone, 480,000 young people between the ages of 10 to 24 were newly infected with HIV, of whom 140,000 were adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19. Lack of AIDS-related information, especially among youths, is attributed to be the primary cause of these ever-growing HIV infections.
